I'm offering free graining lessons. It's fun, it's great excersize, and just think of the experiance you'll gain! Every one gets 10 hides a day to grain. Oh, and there are a couple more truck loads where these came from.

There's 100 deer hides there and I think 6 elk. I ended up throwing out 18 of the deer that were poorly skinned. There are two more piles of about the same size to pick up yet. Hope there arent too many hunter skinned hides in them.
I'm not a super fast worker, but slow and steady wins the race...I only wish I could get a few scraped ahead. It's usually a matter of scraping them one day and softening a couple days later.

Given the number of chilluns I've seen, I say he makes the time! I hope Ya'll know that if any of ya are ever in the area, you are always welcome to hang with us for a while. We'll be moving to the boonies soon, and we'll have a guest house set up for visitors.

We picked up another 100 today and only had to toss ten. The sizes were really impressive, no fawns and not many smalls.
The leather industry overall must be really hurting, cow hides are hardly worth anything, the processor said they will only pay 5 bucks right now and each one takes $2 worth of salt.
Thanks for the invite, phoenix.

So PA - How many hides to you usually tan per year? This year is my personal best at around 70. I still enjoy it a lot and as long as people are buying, I'll keep at this pace. Later... Dave

Well it varys, but 250 or so last year. That includes 18 elk, if I counted right. We have more than a years worth on hand now, probably 325 good ones and some 2nds. The size of hides on the third load was great, but a lot of them are bucks, I bet. If you know anyone who wants small salted deer hides to tan, I have quite a few of those left from last year. Anyone on here can have them for nothing but the cost of the garbage cans if they come pick them up.

Yeah, beautiful. They sure look yellow! I didn't look at your video so I can't tell if those were softened with egg yolks or what you might have smoked them with! If they are smoked it's some very even smoking.
Do you have something special in mind for making with them?
Too bad you can't easily post from home.. well maybe it's a good thing.. see you're at least getting something done!
ps...yep the video works! bet it feels great seein' all them skins just a blowin' in the breeze! Nice work, D.

Those hides were a special order. All does, smoked to that yellowish color. The gals plans on making two different dresses. Can't wait to see what they look like. She does fine work. They looks so nice swaying in the breeze, I had to take some pictures. Joanne, they were all brain tanned and smoked individually. I find sometimes when I smoke in pairs, the hides can be different shades, and i wanted these to all look alike. Thanks for the compliments! Dave
