Yes sir, it is. The same patch ball combo is working out real good. I use a .575 and .017pillow tick in both the rifle and the gun. Different powder charges though. 115 grs. 2f in the Hawken and 70 grs. of 2f in the trade gun.

wow that should put a thumping on ya with that thick patch and big powder charge.that would be a good name for that hawkins Thumper(if'n it ain't awready got a name). i used 110 grains of 2f goex with .018 patchs and a .535 ball i cast from a lyman mold.but "OLE BRUSIER"(my hatfield)didn't like it too much.it likes 70 grains of 3f the same ball and i use flannel for my patchs, lubed with good ole spit but some times with TC Bore Butter. have you ever used leig hi valley patch lube here it's a pumpkin

No sir, I never have tried Lehigh. I use spit in the warm days and a mix of bear oil and beeswax in the winter. I have used a bunch of the Bore Butter and like it. A friend gave me some Bear Oil and told me about this recipe so I tried it and it is like the bore butter only a bit lighter in color. Quite a few fellas in the club swear by the Lehigh, though.

Buckskin, yep, mostly ya git bear oil from bears. Ya have ta kill 'em first 'cause they don't stand fer being boilt down while they're still a kickin'. Some fellers have used deer, possum, coon, goat, ground hog tallow for the same recipe. Use about 1/3 beeswax to whatever grease /tallow/oil that ya have on hand. Make sure it doesn't have any salt in it at all. This last batch I used about 40% beeswax. It depends on what yer rifle likes and where ya live humidity-wise. That's my thinkin' anyways.

well i'll try and ask one real nice like.but your probadly right, they are gonna be stingy with it.me and grizz has some deer tallow in his freezer,if'n the bear don't give it up all peaceable like i'll use the deer tallow.we harvested the tallow our selves so there ain't no salt in it.it be salt free.that rifle of mine is som kind of picky, and it gets some kind of humid down to these parts.gonna also try it for a bullet lube on my black powder cartrigde guns, what do you think

I'd sure give it a try. It is about the same consistancy as the lube I used ta use on my 45-90 bullets.
BTW, is that Sharps that Bill has for sale a Shilo Business rifle?

how do you make bear oil.i'm sure you have to have a bear, which we have a few here but can't hunt them. can you use something else I find the best way to get bear grease is to live trap your bear the traditional way. In the middle of winter when the lakes are frozen, you punch a large hole in the ice and pour frozen peas onto the water . They will float. I prefer the frozen, but I am sure that canned will work just fine. Hide yourself very well, and as close as you can to the hole in the Ice. When smelling the fresh vegetation on the water, the bears will come running to it. Be sure and wait for just the right moment. When the bear bends over to take a pee, run over and kick him in the ice hole! ;D
