Working on some hock skins today. Plan on brain tanning them. Didn't cut myself on this set! Earlier this year wasn't paying enough attention to what I was doing and the knife slipped of the center of the leg bone joint and right into the underpart of my middle finger I had holding the leg.. OWW! could have used some stitches but I didn't go.. All in all a part of the education that I've had to pay to do this stuff! If you decide to make things with hock skins BE CAREFULL.. you can really hurt yourself! Anyway the skins are getting cleaned up.. fleshed them with my washer and turbo gizmo.. salted them.. may repeat this.. I think all the ground substances may be MORE likely to be in this region of the critters. Gravity! Well just thought I'd post about it.. see if anyone else wants to shoot the breeze.. see the little squiggly lines? Pretty interesting how the veins in the deer leave these little marks behind. The deerskins have these in random places all over the skins. The turbo removes all of the membrane layer.. I really don't care for that fuzzy crap getting all over the place anyway. Makes a mess. I usually remove a bit more of the cartilage in those dew claw areas too.. sometimes easier to wait to take the tip of your knife and go down to that last toe joint. I don't know if this one's had them removed or not. Pretty things. They could be used as a weapon too if need be!

Do you have any finished ones? Wondering how flexable they get. Might be able to sew them onto a brain tanned skin to make warshirt type long legs?

I will post the finished ones soon. I have some quebracho, Cody, but haven't yet tried it! I look fwd to seeing the pics of the bag after the smart one posts em! Thanks James, I've made a couple of more rawhidey hockskin bags than not, lol. The washer sure helps cleaning them up, that's for sure.

Well.. the person that wanted these doesn't need them 'tanned' after all, LOL.. figures! Well.. no point in finished them.. was hoping to make a few more dollars BUT came to the conclusion that I should really use that Dakota on them.. I mean they really are thin and being so clean softened up fairly well but I think you and I both know PA and you too Cody that deer skins are very tightly entertwined.. the fiber structure.. SO.. I should be able to thin them down some and have them soften a lot more even before smoking. These things SHOULD be ideal and yeah.. even a whole skin with legs attached should soften relatively well.. plenty more trouble! but tannable. Yep. guy really wanted to buy rawhide ones.. lots cheaper than tanned ones. I think I'm way more than done with them.. I'll cut some slack and consider myself learned and sell these for half the price I wanted and well thin the next ones with the dakota and tan the next ones for myself! that'll work.. getting over the stomach flu.. nice end to 2011!
