thanks i smoked it and rebrained it and smoked it again.it was kind of stiff the first go around.i had it in a garbage bag in my closet when i finished it.the smoke smelled all over the house,so i washed it like it said in matt's book.it is now stiff on the edges where it didn't take the smoke well.i want to use it in the frock coat i 'm planning on making so i think i'll rebrain it and soften it again, with out smoking it again

thanks.i used pine punk.where i hunt thats all i got,did find a beech tree that fell over that would be good.i was told not to use pine because it will smell bad,but thats all i had.after i washed it ,it has a milder smoke smell that won't bring tears to your eyes

Joanne can you let them hides dry in the frame before you flesh them ,or will the washer not hydrate it enough to do that ?

I fleshed a lot of skins that were probably mostly dry.. but they were frozen too.. so froze dried in the frames and then I fleshed them.. cool, huh? after I fleshed them in about 10min each I retightened them in the frames and let them dry.

I like the color of that skin. I love the smell of smoked hides. I guess the smell reminds me of campfires and all the good memories that goes with them.
