I make hard sole moccasins. The uppers are brain tanned buckskin and the soles are buffalo raw hide.

I can sell you some buffalo raw hide for $7.00 per sq foot plus shipping and depending on your foot size it will take some where around 2 sq feet. I only use bull buffalo raw hide for the soles and I wore my pair everyday last summer. I aslo cheat I put Dr. Schol's gel insoles in them.
After I stretch and flesh the hide I re-wet (soak) and let it shrink without stretching when it is dry I lay out the pattern. I cut out the soles and soak them again and when they are soft I sew them. Then I wear them until they are dry then they fit your feet like a pair of gloves.
If I make a pair (custom) I charge $150 they are hand stitched and come with an extra set of soles.

Yes that is hair on the sole of the moccasin I leave the grain on the raw hide when I make moccasins. Sometimes I leave the long hair too before it wears off you don't make a sound walking in them and they don't leave tracks. I don't know if it would work with deer.
