This is a bowie knife i been working on for about 3 weeks. San mai type blade with wrought iron on the outside with file steel in the middle the file steel is the darker black on the bottem. Etching it lemon juice with vinger heat the juice up and then i let i set in there for a day i do it somtime twice to once a day . then i buffed it out and redoing it right now.The handle is black walnut with iron guard . the billet started out out 7 in long and inch or so wide i draw it out and streched the blade. i107.photobucket.com/albums/m298/James-G/Picture1253.jpgi107.photobucket.com/albums/m298/James-G/Picture1255.jpg

I usually disolve about a half cup of salt in the vinegar. It makes it work a little better, and makes a nice dark patina.

I just got back from a living history in Old Washington Ark. and while I was there, there was a bladesmith comp. there at the bladesmith school and there was about 20 of the worlds best I was told there now i really dont know them but Sunday morning they brought out thier big Bowies for the judgeing and Im still quivering from the lust pains I endured looking at them They were real works of art I cant describe how beutiful they were .I could look at them and the more I did the more detail I could see it was incredable .I also learned some new tech. wathing them at the hammer in .It was worth tyhe trip just for that. This is also the place where Bowie's knife was made back yonder and the local smiths all make the two blade paterns and all have the history leson waiting for you .

I learned alot just watching a while they had a hammer in there too .The school for the two week basic class is 850.00 then you have to live somewhere for that time and the other classes like Damascus and handle makeing and other skills were all different prices and times but the basic seemed the longest if not the most expensive but the others wereent far behind but boys that school was something to see they had firepots all in a circle big as a car and big belt grinders everywhere ,powerhammers you name it .I hope some day I could go but things are lible to get bad for my kind here.
