would anyone have any idea on how to go about making a hide canteen. could brain tan be used or raw hide. i have always admired those kidney shaped water bag thingys. i have a couple of gourd canteen but they are bulky and hard to carry when your in a hunting situation. it just seems that a hide water bag would be the perfect option

I found this a while back when I was looking into the same subject, I might have even picked it up off of here. All of the other canteens I see at rendezvous just seemed kind of cheesy to me. I'm in the process of sewing mine right now, and should be done here in a few weeks. here is the tutorial on how to do it... www.geocities.com/baldurstrand/bottle/waterbottle.htmlI thought about doing mine out of braintan, but I think it will really work better with some stiffer leather. I can just see with something like braintan the lining cracking a lot and having to re-wax it all of the time to keep it from leaking. I'm making mine out of a peice of oiltan that I picked up. I'll see about posting some pics when I get done with it.

Just use the bladder. Not sure how they'd travel with , but I use them in camp and they're great. The trouble with them seems to be when the go dry, they can start to rot, so either keep them above half full, or let it air dry completely.
