Howdy yall. I am an avid hunter/trapper in So IL and for years i have wanted to make a pair of mocs and buckskin pants. My twin bro and i have killed 6 deer this year and i saved the brain from all of them as well as the hide. AMOF we will be dehairing them in the next few days. My question is Where do i start? We want to trim the mocs in beaver fur. these will all be used for hunting and and a few Rondys. Eventually we want to do the hunting frock too.
thanks for any help Pintail

Hi Pintail !! I guess I need to ask where do you start what? Tanning the hides or making the mocs? Beaver trimmed mocs will be so so nice. What style moccasins are you interested in making? Do you plan on sticking with any particular tribal design? Lets start with those questions..... lt

i agree with dlt. i'll assume you are already tanning the hides, so i'll add a little here. on pants some people (myself included) will take a old pair of blue jeans and cut the seams out, and use that for a pattern for pants. that is not very historically correct but its a easy start. my advice on making your own brain tan pants is use a pair of old blue jeans that are a size or two to small cuz the buckskin will strecth over time. and welt all of your seams you can use the outside welts as your fringe. on mocs for a rocky mountain trapper style the side seam and pucker vamp mocs would be a period correct choice. i have made both styles and they are easy to make. the side seams are easier and would probadly be easier to trim with fur.

i guess not looking for any one tribal design, but i do want the tops of the Mocs to come up to my calf. im not sure where to start after i buck the skins though? design something similar to this is what we are wanting to do. I am not new to tanning i have done many coon, mink, beaver, and hair on deer hides. but for this i will have the beaver garment tanned. My bro and i are out of college till the Janurary so we plan on getting at least 1/2 the skins bucked. i have looked at the pics of mocs here but do yall have any others? any with fur trim?

You need to go here paleoplanet69529.yuku.com/topic/15249Coogs did a tutorial on the very style of mocs that are in your pic. Knowing her I sure it is a very helpful tutorial. There are braintanning tutorials both there and on this site. If you have already bucked the hides, you could follow Billy's tutorial on paleoplanet. You can also get patterns for the pants and mocs that will make making them easier, from a variety of sources, crazycrow, braintan.com, etc. paweaver.
