Hi yall, being an avid hunter in So. IL i have acquired several deer hides (11 to be exact). After the 2nd shotgun season i fell sick and was unable to work with my hides for almost 1 week. 1 was bad, I got 8 fleshed and 6 dehaired, but some of them have a slight odor. Will this affect the outcome? after i got them done, i rolled them up and froze them till i feel better.

if they just smell kind of bad, they will tan alright and the smell will go away after it has been smoked real well. i have this problem regular, with the way i have to work sometimes. i freeze all of my hides and will lay them out to thaw on a sunday evening with plans to work the hide through the up coming week. well sometimes work gets in the way and i can't get to them as i have planned. and they usually smell kind of funny. i think, (and others here can tell you better than i can), but as long as it aint completely rotten you can tan them with good results. if you can stand the smell ;D
keeping them rolled up and in the freezer till latter is ok too.

appreciate the help. i have tanned many hides before (deer hair on, coons, lots of beaver, mink, fox, yotes, etc) but this is our first attempt at buckskin. My bro and i plan on getting at least 2 hides done before the spring semester starts up again. I was just a bit worried, we both got sick bout the same time and were unable to do much. I broke my back in a construction accident last summer so i cannot flesh/dehair he has to do that.
