well the spike hawk went to its new home sat the same day i broke the blade for the folder and tonight i was polishing the cub scout hawk and noticed a dozen or more stress cracks so i guess he will get a knife instead oh well thats mystery steel for ya

Sott I've got some good news for ya. Stress cracks ain near as important in a hawk as they are in a knife. Polish it up, test it out, beat it up, if it lives, give it to him. Thick chunks will often develop shallow cracks if you forge it too cool. they dont hurt anything unless the go all the way through. I've been using that first kukri I made for james (with a crack 3/4 of the way up the blade) for a year now without it breaking.
