well its been raining cats and dogs the last couple of days and is suppose to rain for the rest of the week. so i can't really do nothing with all of this wetness. i got the buffalo still in the frame under my shed and the rain still got on it. i got the elk soaking in brains, waiting for this rain to stop so i can hang it to dry(dinsmore method ) and get busy softening it. so while i'm rained in i figure now is a good time to catch up loading pictures. so heres a few of my progress at my first attempt at a elk fleshing graining i have been using joe and vikki dinsmore's method on all my deer hides for a while now with great results. to be honest i was a little concerned on how it would do on elk seeing how it was my first elk. i was out of koh and did not want to wait for none to come in or reorder none just for one hide, so i just grit my teeth and knuckled down on that elk after only soaking it in water for two days. now i must say this elk hide was summer hide, but i couldn't see it being no harder than a deer except for around the neck and shoulders. which only stands to reason since a elk is so much bigger. now if'n it will ever quit raining i can get something finished. i got a calico shirt i've been working on since november maybe now would be the time to get it finished

I think you'll find the main thing is to do a good pre stretch on the rump. That's always the thickest part on these cow elk. Usually the neck is not a problem at all to soften if you can get the grain broken up. Some people dry scrape the necks, which is good if you want them cleaner, but I normally don't. I do trim some off the neck.

Nice photos Louisiana Shade ! We just picked up a bunch of elk that we are looking forward to doing. We find that we can get the elk to come out as nice as our deer. We also trim the neck back if it is excessively long, why bother with it for only one sqft or so. I wish I had an extra scraper to send to you, I'd sure hate using that short one you have. Hannes, have Pete make this guy a real scraper would ya?! I'll pay the postage. lt

up date on the elk. i started softening it this pass weekend, but was feeling kind of poor. had plan on working it this afternoon but had to work late. the weather forecast has a big chance of rain for the next few days, so i put the elk in the freezer so it wouldn't go bad on me. maybe this weekend i can get it finished. i hate spring time in louisiana
