For all you trappers. "It is not my words below"Both the Winchester 1866 and 1873 were made in rifle and carbine forms. My 73 is a rifle and my 66 is a carbine. If it was my choice for one gun to go with an old time outfit, I would choose the 66 carbine, but either rifle or carbine of the 66 or 73 Winchesters would be good. . But the 73 was manufactured clear up to 1922, so for an old time outfit it’s not so clear cut as a 66. As to operation, the 73 was an improvement on the 66. Not only the iron receiver, but other functions as well. It was originally chambered for the 44:40 center fire cartridge (much more powerful than the 44 rim fire Henry cartridge of the Model 66. It was made in a bunch of different configurations and several calibers
