its been raining almost every other day around here so i decieded to finially finish my shirt that i started almost a year ago. i aint never made nothing from no cotton before. i made plenty of mistakes, but the sleeves are even and so is the shirt tail. i made this in the style of the beth gilgun's tiding from the 18th century books. it has the under arm gussets as well as the gussets around the colar. let me tell yall, these gussets are a hoot to sew in. i only said 48 cuss words while doing them. it is all hand sewn with cotton thread

you're a good pard cody, but i think i'll be shameful and wear the shirt. get you some material and i'll make you one i'm tall but not that tall, my thundering brother. it comes down to my knees. the dirrection said to make it 70 inches long and fold in half. i made mine 75 inches long and folded just in case i messed up. i'm gonna cut some of it off and hem it up when all the swelling in my fingers heal up ;D the shirt was white when i started on it caretaker that red is blood stains. ;D thanks for the nice comments

Nice shirt Billy, Looks something like the Missouri River Boatman's shirt that Folkwear has patterns for. Theres a trick for doing the gussets that make it easy but its been so long since I made one that I cant remember. Nice job. Do you use a running stitch or back stitch? Do you wax your thread to prevent knotting up? I use to always go to a fabric or quilting store and buy either quilting thread, which is thicker than the usual thread, or my favorite thread, Button HOle Twist which is very strong. I have a shirt that I made in the late 70's by hand that is still holding together. Hand sewing is great. Your shirt is super !!!!!!

thanks dlt. i used a running stitch. on the sleeves and down the sides i used a running stitch and then sewed a whip stitch on top of that. i just used plain cotton thread, cuz i like for the thread to knot up and break just kidding. i wish you would have gave me that bit of advise, before i started this project, but now i know and the next shirt i make will be easier
