when you watch movies like dances with wolves what is it that people cannot get any historical value from? Why is it and other movies not good for its historical content?

the book dances with wolves was taken from had some good research in it. the author from the book, which i can't recall his name wanted to show the indians life style and culture. many books that are made into movies have good historical references in it such as lonesome dove. the problem is when hollywood gets there hands on it they are trying to sell a movie, not history, so they get good looking actors and actress and make them look cool to sell the movie. to the rest of the world history is boring. the movie dances with wolves was a good movie one of my favorite, the dress for the characters is close and they used guns that existed back then. chances of a calvery officer owning a henry rifle is slim to none and during that time period the movie was made from the calvery would had been using spencers and springfields. not sharps rifles

You really have to be a thread counter not to appreciate Dances with Wolves, it's true there are so many things out of context in that film, but it's still a great movie. I learned just to let it go and enjoy the movie without picking out the details. If you want, you can find something good,, and if you want you can find something bad also. I wouldn't use something out of a movie to document my gear, but I do recognize different details and it gives me a new perspective on details. It's because it's someone elses ideas, and usually those of good input to that film. In Jeremiah Johnson there is a scene where he rubs his hands on his horse, before going into that indian camp and stealing Gues horses back. I picked up on that , because it was actually done in history where horse theives (mainly natives) would rub odors of a horse on themselves, then the stolen horses wouldn't react and make a noise while trying to steal them from a camp. I think it was george catlin who described it in his journal. So you can get something out of hollywood,, just research it out.
