Ive been building a flintlock and most things Ive been able to do in a try or two but I tried pouring the nose area with pewter in a chevron striped type thing like Ive seen and it just didnt work after several tries I used up a pound of pewter and it aint cheap. Hershel House uses lead to do this ,but I thought I would use pewter .Does anybody have iny info to help me

Cody, if you don't have it there is a book called "recreating the american long rifle" , they show several chevrons in different metals, these are filed or scrolled , but not in the casting. The book seems to be a pretty good instruction, hope it helps. Allen

Howdy Cody - go to the American Longrifles forum, join up, and then search for cast pewter nosecap - several of the best of the best muzzleloading gunmakers hang their hat there including Ken Guy who IIRC did a tutorial on this subject - I know one thing that he does is heat up a bolt that will fit down aways in the muzzle to warm up that section of the barrel - hot pewter and cold iron don't like each other.......... ANYBODY interested in early muzzleloaders and their accoutrements: building, collecting, or just looking - should visit there. Not only is there plenty of discussion and how-to, but there is a Virtual Library of originals from all over that is continuosly growing too........ here's the link..and hope this helps........ americanlongrifles.org/forum/index.php
