Thats an impressive bow you have Redthunder. I'm interested in the elk antler bow that Lewis and Clark received from the Hidatsas. I would love to have a horn backed bow.

I've talked to people who say you should expect to have to try several staves before getting a good bow. Is is unrealistic to hope for a decent bow on the first try?

I think your right PA, the old guy that helped me make my first one told me you might think you selected the right peice of bois de arc, but when you get down to shaving it you might have another story. I don't know how to look for the limbs that are ideal for bows, you can have a bad year where drought, ice storms, or flooding can make one ring bad and ruin the whole bow. A few guys that got me started on it knew only a little about it. My chances of finding a good one to start with would be pretty small.

Te best bet for a "do it right the first time " bow would be splitting the billet (stave) from the heartwood of an old tree. Rock Maple works well for this, and splits easily.
