Why not? Specially this time of year. anyway this was another runaway ..had a couple scratches from barbwire. A 15 m/o bull. anyway this two local cronies shot the buff and skinned it and came over here and banged on my door at 9a the other morning.. thought it was my 19 coming home from a night on the town. well anyway I should have known by the slashes and even a hole in the skin that these guys had scored the crap out of the skin.. anyway after much physical exertion.. wetscrapeing the fresh bison it popped larger holes.. so anyway next day I ended up just cutting the top section totally off.. bummer.. real waste.. not me cause I was fascinated by the ease of fresh scraping and also the cool ridge of grain along the spine where the hump is.. wow.. how cool.. no wonder I couldn't thin the hair on robes right right there.. it is because of that ridge of grain on the top part of the skin being so thickened.. anyway I have almost totally softened it and quit as plans are to resmoke heavily for more color.. hopefully SOON..

you can see some deep set hair roots this time of year just like on a deer. getting ahead of myself a bit.. cleaned the fur side with the washer and turbo nozzle too.. that's a lot of power.. 3500 psi.. anyway whatever I could take off was less I had to scrape off so I just turned it up and blasted it basically.. The holes that happened happened not from washer but from bar and beam exertion. see the knife marks?

next day I modified the size of that skin dramatically.. might as well make things easier on myself. Used shortening and dawn dish soap! some softening. some presmoking is this skin ever going to dry? getting a bit weary Dry enough I'm going to smoke it some more soon.. for a darker color mostly.

Oh I more than likely will, Cody ;D Just my nature to complain about something. I am feeling a little weak.. BUT.. was thinking to resmoke and try and get lots of color into the skin, THEN maybe saturate it once more so I can resew the holes.. (again)! Had to get out the wahinkte and thin it down some..was hoping I could get away without thinning.. guess again! LOL.. sure have that big coyote medicine.. no doubt about it!

That should be a cool peice of buckskin when it's done. I'd be cabling it for sure. In my brief attempt at buffalo I found out that they don't stretch like a deer. It seems that all the experts work them over a cable or rope at some point.

Before I get done I will be an expert on bison.. lol. You know I've worked on lots of them and well daing straight coming to the conclusion that if "like Wes Housler says" they're not over 1/8" thick when you're thinning them and fold them and feel that then they may give you bit of trouble softening.. lol.. no shit! well done the same mistakes over and over but like the Coyote.. I've survived! and not totally unscathed either.. almost have to roll out of bed every morning! This working yourself to death will help you realize what you're doing right and wrong sooner or later. for me, it's always been later. But at least I've earned what knowledge I have gained. I think all skins stretch once they're thinned properly.. if they don't then there is still more to thin! anyway my skin's in the deep freeze.. drs appts and so forth today.. not my own, thank GOD! but i'll get back to the skin soon enough and hopefully will have another go at perfection.. least before arthritis sets in too bad and I can no longer move!

Thanks Beau. I was thinking of a gun case and knife sheath cover possibly??
You know we've been acquainted for awhile, haven't we?

Well I kept the wahintke and tossed the tradition out the window.. Still have the bison skin but want to resmoke.. too light for my taste. Decided to use the machine flesher. Thin buff now! Going to reinstall a rope for pulling over outside PA. I used the stationary staker to pull the skin over but rope or cable'd be better for sure.

Did you notice those 'growth rings' in the upper pic of the last post. Think those are so fascinating.. like the buff was growing faster than it's skin would allow.. those were only on the belly section. Wonder if those lines are visable on larger bison that are wet scraped like that? Awesome.

Looking good. I'm still partial to my snare cable. Tried other cables, but always go back to the thin one, it digs in better.
