Guy I did the last hair on elk brought me over a whole bunch more hides (hair on) to tan for him .. Tried talking him into hair OFF.. but naw, he's into the hair.. hollow or not! Hey,, it's his money.. but they sure are a work out! Anyway I got a lot of the work on the elk done yesterday.. what a day.. very sunny hot and next to NO wind.. Kinda glad it's rainy today! Cleaning house and laundry should be like a walk in the park. Maybe if the kids would do some chores while I tan we could spend some quality time at the park having a picnic in the rain?!?
These things look pretty in the frames.
It barely fit in this one but I just needed it to be in one to get it fleshed easier. I didn't get the whole hide wet either but just from the dethaw lots of the hair was wet and needed to be dried.. good thing for shop vacs with blowers.. good thing for powerwashers too cause I wouldn't have wanted to flesh the elk any other way.. funny how small the skins look after rolling them out on the ground.. they do nothing but grow as work progresses on them!
This skin had lots of scores on it too. Bit stronger than the also loose fibered bison
Awe man it's huge.. just a monster!
This is some thick thick winter fur! This guy is crazy! he already has the one I did before for him on the wall! All I can think is that one of these might make for a unique cover for a Harley hog or something! Might look pretty cool in a garage covering a bike.. real man-caveish like, well at least IMO!
I took the skin to my electric machine flesher. I don't see any scores anymore at least. didn't feel hardly any lighter in weight when I was done either. My faithful fat buddy Buddy was by my side all day yesterday. Think I was dropping pcs of bison flesh all over him! Don't think he ate very much of it if at all even though the skin wasn't salted..hmm. Probably learned his lesson on that!
That was a freaking chore! And I went to sleep last night wishing real bad that we had a large heated jacuzzi like the one at the Hampton Inn in Prescott AZ! I can feel it now just imagining!
Well anyway this is what it looked like last evening before I took it out of the frame and crammed it into a bag and stuck it in my newly cleaned freezer.. Good thing I cleaned that freezer out is all I can say. It didn't feel much lighter.. I will brain the skin maybe use a rope .,. maybe,,,, gently! and smoke it!
