Was surprised with this animal last evening. My coyote hunter friends pulled in the drive and I thought perhaps with their big family they might have had a deerskin or two from the youth hunt to drop off.. but no lo and behold it was a mean critter.
Just kidding.. this we little fox lay in the box of their truck. "Ya want her?" Sure! Thanks!!
I'm getting a little quicker at skinning.. Only missed a couple of toe bones. I will run out for more gas for the pressure washer. I really like using it as the most distasteful part of tanning has now been done. This animal was found lying by this local family's hunting blind. And it was killed naturally.. perhaps by a coyote with a full stomach.. I didn't ask the hunters why a coyote may have killed it.. they probably would have told me the same thing as bjlong on pp forum, that sometimes a coyote will kill them just to eliminate animals that compete with it for food.. all about survival with the coyotes. I could hear them last night.. probably watching my neighbors for a weak calf or newborn one perhaps.. they've done a lot of damage over there this past summer so I'm sure that come January the cow farmer will be greatful to this group of coyote hunters we have here. I guess I missed out on more than a few calfskins as there wasn't anything left to tan after the coyotes were through. There were just several puncture wounds on the fox but the carcass and skin were bloodied up quite a lot. Nature can be very unkind. I'm blessed to have these skins to tan. Gives me a great deal of satisfaction to know that some of the essence of these magnificent creatures can or will be sometimes preserved and even made into something useful. I plan to make a quiver with this little vixens skin. Time to run down to the party store for more gasoline! The machine will flesh it nice at just an idle but it needs gas to start!
