thanks for the replies, yes i have shot it , maybe about 50 rounds so far. I finally got it finished before november 07. It takes a little while to get used to smooth bore but it's fun. Just to start a good topic, I bought this as a kit from Track of the Wolf and I would not do it again, for several reasons, I intend to spread the word a little about these kits so I hope a few of you are interested enough to ask why. It's figured maple, or tiger stripe, what ever you want to call it. When you buy a kit like this you'll pay extra for that. That was fair enough, but you won't get what you think, it should have had more figure to it. But that was the least of problems with the kit. It is very wise just to go to a gun builder and have your gun made for you. For your average "buckskin joe" kinda guy, it is really hard to put these kits together also. I hope we all can learn from my problems on it.

I don't know how I missed this thread. I like trade guns too. It looks to me that you got a good looking gun out of the deal. I had to send a stock back to TOTW yesterday. The barrel channel wasn't cut square and so it made the toe of the rifle turn into your chest when the top barrel flat was level to the horizon. It cost me all the time to repack, stand in line at the P.O., plus the shipping to send it back. I wrote them a nice little letter that I will send them after I get my new stock back in the mail. I don't know why they can't figure this quality stuff out before they send it to the customer in the first instance. Sometimes I think they ship it out hoping you won't notice it is crap until you whittle on it. Then it's too late, you own it. Sorry about the rant.

I was so lucky I ran into a good gun builder, this guy builds his own stock in the same manner of the gun builders hundreds of years ago, cuts a rough blank and sets the stock up for 5 years before using it. He'll measure YOU before he builds your gun, this way you get a gun that when you hold it up each angle fits you perfectly. I never knew so much about gun building in history, those guys were really good. Makes you think? Each gun was made by hand, one at a time... so it was essentiallly CUSTOM made ,, having said that , in todays time I could be a gun builder and give track of the wolf a run for the money by just sitting here in front of my computer and order stocks and parts from other countries and make a pretty good profit. I could be wrong because I do not know where tow gets their stocks and parts, but i'm not doubting what builders are telling me. My stock probably came from a third world country and was built on a CNC machine to computer specs in general layout. The parts are built in another country , so it's just a mass produced pile of parts and peices we have scattered across the world. Then someone makes a minor modification to fit their process of work and we have major mistakes that you and I are paying for. The serpent on my trade gun had to be cut down, it was too big to even fit on the land where it belongs, i had to cut a section of it down, solder it together and then try to bolt it to the gun. was a big mess, and for the total cost of the gun..... I could be owning a CUSTOM gun that would have cost me less......

the gun turned out great considering all the problems you had. i know a guy down here that makes fine muzzleloaders from Track of The Wolf's kits.he told me he uses only blank stocks and carves them out.he also said to order a grade fancier that what you really want, what you consider AAAA grade they consider AAA,but you pay the higher price.i hate to hear all of that, the main reason i would want to build my own gun is to say it was American made.you can't say that if they send you some crap, from some TURD world country no one can pronounce or ever heard of.i am glad yall put in this post and weren't shy about doing it.i now know what i got to look forward to when i build my flintlock.i too may regrete it but it's something i've always wanted to do

I hope my experience will help someone , haha. It was an adventure, maybe not as bad as I make it sound. After I talked to a real builder I wasn't happy with the kit idea anymore. Next time! I'll do things different , I honestly hope someone proves me wrong about where the sellers get supplies for these kits though. The builder that I met, Wayne "parsons" Cox, is a great person, i'm really hoping he'll build my next gun. I'm going for a shotgun with a mesquite stock. I need to be researching it out now to find out what shotgun i really need in my collection. Lots to ponder with, haha!
