i drill the hole in top,and use a curtain rod,the flat "L" shaped kind to scrape the inside out.alot of shaking and cussing goes into it then i put about 10 small rocks in it and shake and cuss some more.then cuss some more trying to get all the rocks back out then i heat the gourd in the oven at 200 degrees until it's hot to the touch, during this time you melt your wax.pour melted wax in it and shake and cuss till it is evenly coated or your wax hardens up on you.you can use bees or parifin wax.i used parifin because i like my water to taste like water.they say beeswax makes the water taste like beeswax.but then again after its been in the gourd for awhile the water taste like a old gourd.
before doing all of this you have to let the gourd dry out.during this time the gourd will look nasty with mold on it.it is ready when the gourd is light as a feather and you can hear the pulp inside when you shake it

I"ll give away my secret to cleaning a gourd,, take a small rod maybe 1/4" round, long enough to reach the bottom of your gourd. drill a small hole in one end and insert about a foot of plastic weedeater string,, chuck the rod up in your drill and get after it. This makes cleaning a gourd pretty easy and fast. I used to go to all the trouble of lining mine with beeswax, but it is hard to cover the hole thing good enough so now i just put up with the taste and go on. When i get one clean enough it doesn't seem to have any taste at all.

haha, I wish i was that smart, i had to copy the idea from someone else, glad you get the idea, hope it helps everyone else. It's a pain in the *** shaking them over and over. since you got a new gourd project, here's a little picture of an authentic canteen gourd that I found in a museum. It's an original, and pretty nice looking at that.
