I'm fashioning up a new bag.. thinking of sending it out to my dad in AZ. It should confirm his suspicions anyway.. lol. It still needs oil and softening and some stitching.. thinking of adding a buckskin handle. Be kind of a neat back pack for a kid to take to school! Be against the rules most likely!

Yeah, this one didn't make it but the twin of it survived the birthing process.. I did a couple of deer that were unborn into bags.. they barely had hair but the epidermis was formed on those and their spotting was evident in their skin.. it was wild.. they were beautiful but I had to destroy them.. worked hard on both of them.. but oh well.. so that's what inspired me to get my taxidermy license. thx, Allen.

so you had to destroy them because you didn't have a taxidermy license? Or because they had spots?

If you wish to tan fawn.. you need to have the right authorization to do so.. taxidermists licenses and also some other paperwork is needed.. for science and educational purposes, etc. so just one avenue.. No one in MI other than those persons are allowed to possess fawnskins with spots..even roadkilled deer.. it is because of the highly treasured 'spots'. yep.. don't want those pesky hide tanners killing all the deer for their spots!.. bad enough they all want big wild cat skins with spots!..

Joanne I think I've heard something like that here in Oklahoma. However some of the tribes here can do it through ceremonial rights. I think a few have done buffalo before, there is one on peabody i think , sounds like a rather large bag though.

They liked the whitetails skins because the spots of them are reminders of the stars in the heavens. And they are like that too as there is no set pattern to their spot markings... Here is a pic of the unborn fawn that I learned was against the law to possess. I did have a permit for the roadkilled mother and it was my young daughters suggestion to look and see if there were any inside.. I might not have looked if it were not for here so I was kind of surprised to find them in her carcass. pretty incredible looking aren't they? the spots do indeed look astral :-) I'm posting the pic as I feel it's one of beauty and life actually.. nothing more and nothing less. Anyone notice the fruit loops between? :-)

thats interesting joanne, If I didn't have a day job I could spend more time with tanning and cool projects. It's so much work that we can start and I have so many unfinished projects to go back and catch up on. I got into tanning because I love re-enactment so much, I needed material for reenacting and couldn't afford to buy it all. I ended up learning how to braintan, then that evolved into native history, then one thing after another. I guess I have a deep appreciation for hard work so Native American History fell right on the top of my list.
