sounds like your on the better path Joe, for a horn that looks good without all the orange and yellow gunk Ron Vail probably does the best job I've seen. They actually look real. I like the looks of his straps also, no fantasy stuff. I stole these from his website, hope he don't mind.

Your right ThunderMoon....it's pretty neat isn't it!!!It makes you wonder about drawing on the product. It seems like it may not be too easy to do.However, it comes to mind, that if one had a pattern or stencil....Huhmmm but then again what exactly goes over the horn.Well, there are some really nice pictures here.I also enjoy the showmanship, and the way it's displayed.

horns and other powder containers were all different sizes made from just about anything. The most common horn holds one pound of powder. saying that around the wrong crowd can get into a heated forum, For some people in history, not everyone , but militia and trappers who got powder from a company often gave out powder in a one pound ration , if your horn didn't hold one pound you did without. One militia I cant think of the name, had strict orders for the recruits to have a certain gun and a powder horn that would hold 1 pound. Powder was distributed out of a keg , and measured, the orders for a man to carry powder just kept him from running out when they needed him. Mainly a militia thing. A bigger horn is probably just too cumbersom to carry, and possibly more expensive if bought from a horner. I think the reason we see many small horns is because the horners made do with what was culled off bad horns , they were seldom desired and not used, thats why they are still around today existing in museums. The well used, well liked horns were used and lost in history, the others hung on a wall until collectors got them.
