Had a hide with a few stiff spots yesterday...so I made a quick little smoking setup. didn't take the time to sew a skirt on it...just wanted to get some smoke on it before I dunked it back in the brains. here's a few pics for those interested. this setup worked surprisingly well. got a nice golden smoke on it.

it came out nice and soft. gonna go back and smoke it some more for color though then trim the lacing holes off the edges. i used a stapler to make it into a sock. that'll tell ya how soft i got it...a regular office stapler was what i used. i'll get a pic on here of it later today, gotta go to thew family easter lunch here shortly. ya know a fat boy ain't gonna pass on a good meal ;D

Drapes nicely. Do you ever use a frame to put it on when your done with it to flatten it out? Makes for easier cutting for using a pattern. Dlt

yeah I frame soften. I just threw the hide in a chair to take the pic. I've trimmed the edges,re-brained & smoked it since the pic was taken. it turned out pretty nice.

fishinmusician, Good to have ya here. Nice smoking set up there, I guess you use glue? I've got a lazy smoking system. I'd show it, but it needs a new roof and looks like the leaning tower of pizza. ;D

My smoking set up. I use a 55 gallon barrel with a chimney out the back. I mounted a computer fan at the end of the chimney. (recycling) I hook the fan up to a 12 volt battery when everything is in place. It really bellows out the hide and is taking about 1/2 the time to smoke a hide. The only drawback is that I have more flare-ups. Since I have my coals/punk in the front of the barrel, I don't worry about the hide catching on fire. At least it hasn't happened yet. So far I've smoked 10 hides this way. I'm curious how long the plastic fan will last.

paskinner - I forgot to mention that I sew my hide sacs on a sewing machine. It's much faster for me than glue. Then as I let the hide air out, I pull the threads off. I finally figure out how to post pic, so I'll be on here more often, when I'm not working too hard. I found my first antler shed last night! left antler of a 10 pont buck back behind my house. I've been looking for sheds for 6+ years... woow hoow! Dave
