I knew a man in Southern Oregon named Ivan Sherk. He was quite the historian. In his reading he learned of a boat that came up the Umqua river back in the 18oo's and got ambushed by some local natives of the time and the boat ended up being sunk/sank? Anyway he did enough research to find where the boat had gone down and proceeded to find the boat and it's small cannon. He removed the cannon from the wreckage and restored it to firing condition. He'd take that darn thing to fancy cannon shoots and without all the fancy sites and go fast whistles and bells and hed' repetedly win competitions with it. Irritated the heck out of those modern cannon shooters.!!
We also use to go to a shoot called Frog Hollow in Oregon. They had great trail walks and canoe shoots~ sort of like a trail walk except you shot out of a canoe. One of the guys made a cannon that would shoot bowling balls and with everyone gathered on one side of the narrow lake~ a bowling ball would be fired nearly straight up and toward the other side of the lake. It would disappear from site then come whistling down and crash into the woods over yonder. Great fun was had by all!!! Imagine centuries from now. someone coming across those bowling balls out in the middle of the woods.
I also saw on tv one time a competition shoot somewhere in europe. Scotland if I remember correctly~ Shooting round ball at targets must have just gotten too darn easy for those boys because instead of shooting across the lake at a target~ they were skipping the balls off the water and hitting the target. Now that was interesting. Dlt
