If you have some skins that are factory tanned they might be less than a desireable color for reinactments. A trick I learned years ago was to use RIT color remover. Get a large container.... big enough to easily hold lots of hot water and the leather you want to remove the color from. Mix the RIT with the water then put your hide or already made leather item into the water and swish it around and dunk the hide in and out to make sure it is equally wet all over. Allow thehide to soak for a while...check occasionally and swish and dunk. My first leather dress I made for Mt. Man re-enactments was of factory tanned hides of a yucky color. My dress came out a tan color and looked much better. I don't know how this would work on dark brown hides. Might come out pink or something. Try a small piece first. Had a friend who made himself a fancy set of skin clothing... it was that yellowish color that is common in factory hides. He was sort of short and round and from that day on..after the first time he wore them to rendezvous...he was called YELLER PIG.

Thats not a bad idea LT, when having to use commercial tanned leathers I've seen a few people dye it with walnut hulls, or smoke it even helps a little. These ideas might help the endeavour to create a little better rendezvous scene. I attempted to dye some chrome tan once , it was the famous blue/green color. When mixed with the brown walnut hulls it turned purple.... beware, brown and blue make a purple color, duh. Should have used that RIT color remover huh.

i got a old pair of buckskin pants that are factory tanned, they are the ugliest shade of 1970 disco orange. i have long out growed them. being to well made to throw away i made a pair of half leggings or botas,to wear over my calvery boots that i wear to the cowboy shoots. i used the rits color remover on them, worked preaty good. i just threw them in the washer and mixed the rits in the wash. it faded the orange to a more bareable color. there is some pics of me wearing them on another thread.
