When I lived in Penna. we use to fish for catfish quite a bit. We use to use anise dough balls. Take white bread, mush it up in balls about the size of a small marble and work some anise flavoring into them. I hardly ever went home without a catfish to fry. The catfish out here out of the Musselshell are way nasty, way too muddy tasting. To do any good fishing around here you need to go to Fort Peck resivour and go for Walleye or head west a bit and catch brookie trout. I have a nice little ultra light pole that I love to catch those little trout with. Dlt

i normally use catalpa worms. when i'm out of them i'll just use cold worms cut into 1" sections. also found out that catfish will bite "Zote" soap. it's a pink mexican soap we get from the dollar store. here's a link www.mexgrocer.com/7255.html we cut the soap into 1/2" squares and put it on the hook.

So you don't have to clean your fish? hahaha Can't imagine how you came across that discovery. Grizz sez... " Well one day I was taking a bath in the tub with my favorite cat fish.. me & him's good buddies. I was a washin his back with some cheap soap and I accidently done dropped it in the water.... my buddy catfish gobbled that thar bar up faster than you can say "dont drop the soap". Twas then my friends I realized that probably all cats would bite on it.... and Wa-La... a new lure is born!" Zat how it went old Grizzly bear? haha.

chicken gizzards work well too!!
Who said the catfish taste like "mud"?
I've had that problem too. The mud taste, as I was told by old timer catfishermen, is the fat. You have to scrape the fat off them fellars then soak them in buttermilk before you fry.
And I skin my catfish.
I tried it and it worked great!!
My preference in catfish is the small blue channel cats. Great taste.
