finished my buckskin pants satuday. it took 4 deer hides to make them. the hides i use were probadly about 8 square feet. so they were kinda small. i now see why already made braitan buckskin pants cost so damn much. it took me 21 hours just to sew them together. 11 hours friday and 10 hours on saturday. that ain't includeing the time i got in tanning the hides. i hand sewed the pants and used 100% real cotton thread. sunday evening i hung the pants up by the legs and tied the opening closed. draped the waist opening over my smoke stack and smoked them to a nice golden brown color. will have some pics of them on here by this weekend

i got the idea for these pants out of Frontier Scouts and Buffalo Hunters Schetch Book by James Hanson. the pants in the book were made in the 1860's and were collected from the upper missouri river country. they had no waist band and exposed buttons. i used a old pair of civil war pants that were too small for me as a pattern. i just cut the seams out trace out the pattern on buckskins and sewed them together. i added the under straps cuz i plan to wear my mocs with them, and i think they look cool.

Those look almost like the first ones I made. I bet yours are softer, mine were out of some of my first hides and I was tanning fallow deer, that have rumps almost like elk, and I didn't get them real soft, but they'll last a long time. I should smoke mine again. I see I'm not the only one who peices the legs together, good job!

Nice pants BB!!! They came our really well. Yes it is amazing how much time and effort goes into clothing construction. Only those who actually make the items realize it. Folks that just purchase the products can't understand why the price it so high. Selling for anything less cuts your own throat. Cant wait to see them on. I like your vest too. ;-) !!
