billy, that is beutifull! what type of animal is the haironn from? the only prob i see , and wonder how one would put the buttons on, through the hair, without the hair being fluffed, scrambled, and showing some white leather on one side of the button hole, top or bottom of the slit?

thanks hannes. its white tail deer. the funny thing about it is i got that one off the side of the road. i was going to my deer camp and when i came home about a hour later it was there. and so were the buzzards. the hide was fresh and the buzzards didn't want to give it up easy. they swarmed me and raised all kind of hell before i got it to my truck. it was so cut up, that i didn't want to fool with braintanning it and thought it would be a good one to try for alum tanning. it was my first attempt to alum tan and came out soft as brain tan. what surprised me about it was how easy it was to sew. i'm very green when it comes to sewing, but i sewed it together in less than a hour. i plan to add some braintan around the edges as a trim. i haven't planed on adding any buttons cuz of the same concerns of yours. i'm just going to wear it open.

hey hannes on the buttons you could sew loops on one side for the button to go through. that way you aint got to cut slits in the hide. as far as buttons go you can get them buttons that got a eyelet on the back side of the button and attach them that way. many of the brass military buttons from the civil war are like that
