I'm getting there Beaudro.. must say, I love buffalo robes.. even if they're the wrong time of year skins.. I figure that it doesn't hurt to put the time into softening an out of the right season skin just to get the hang of softening the inseason ones.. here and elsewhere if someone knows you want something the price goes up so sometimes I take them like I can get them and in this case it just so happens to be one of the projects that I needed to 'wrap up' doesn't seem like aging hurt this skin at all.. I needed to thin it a bit more as it had some areas that were really in need of a lot more paper weight thickness.. for some reason.. maybe some metal dust residue building up on my 320 grit paper belt i couldn't seem to keep the bur just the way I wanted it..but anyway I think that I've gotten the skin quite a bit more manageable now. Someone's actually waiting for me to finish this skin so that he can buy it for 550.. cool, huh?? My dad will be happy since I'm always hitting him up for $$ maybe I can put some cash back in his pocket for a change! I told the guy over and over that it would be much better to buy a skin that is a winter hide.. lots nicer fur on it, y/k? But he lives in TX and feels that this one is JUST RIGHT. Gotta love that..huh?? well I'll be keeping my fingers crossed that the bison 'robe' tanning continues to progress well. And how is your bison skin tanning project going Beau? this is what mine is looking like in the last couple of days.. nice to finally get it back in a frame! so...still working on tanning this one.. got all day to work hey??

Good going on the buff hide there Joanne,, mines not going so good, i'm sort of put out with a bad shoulder for the time being. I have said I usually do a few buff hides each year, but this year i'm not going to make it. I've got a small half hide that I want to finish scraping on soon, but i'm not suppose to be doing that for a little while longer. I think i figure out why the kids left the nest so early.... always too many projects around here.

Nice headskin robe you have there, killstwo. I like the other one too! 18....without a powerwasher, 1x42 belt sander.. I'd be willing to bet $ that you probably didn't even use a shop vac to dry that super thick long hair on those either, did ya? Well anytime you feel like you'd like to jump in to one my pics be it with a skin stretcher, paint brush(sharpening stone!)..whatever, that could only be a plus! thx Your skins area beautiful! Ooookayyy.. what do i do now??? lol (j/k, i'll think of something, even if it's wrong??) It is supposed to rain here soon.. so that nice soft rainwater should help.. thought i'd try to put a couple more hours into the trouble spots and maybe try and work some oil into them.. think I might have a little pure neatsfoot oil under my sink. hmm I have a guy that's been waiting some time to buy this skin.. I copied your redheadskin pic and fwd'd it to him.. hope you don't mind, kt? and well he sure did like the circular design you put on yours and would really like one on his so i'm sure that i can make myself some more work that doesn't come all that naturally! Walmart paint in a tube? water based? Beau.. I'm really sorry to hear about your bum shoulder. I should have recalled that you'd said it was giving you trouble not that long ago.. sometimes i have a very selective short memory....I hope your shoulder heals up really quick and you're back at the bison skin scraping and softening real quick. Thanks for asking about mine. Yeah the kids sure DO grow up fast! I'm not getting any younger myself! Yeah and I know about those projects too.. the garage the bison is leaning on needs major overhaul and I am the one doing the overhaul. I got the electric chainsaw bar pinched in the third pole on the corner that I was cutting down to try to lower the poles that the frost had heaved.. I can wait to strip of the metal door cutouts and side it with little bitty boards.. make my own board and batten siding.. yikes!! Hope i'm not too much older and the rain is not pouring in the roof before that chore is complete. Beside bison, deerskin hide tanning.. this is the other summer project.. no rest for the wicked?? well maybe a messed up barn is better than no barn.. hopefully some big wall of wind might come up.. AFTER I get the bison skin done! Well maybe NOT.. I think it has to be classified as a 'tornado' and big walls of wind, wind gusts don't count! be my luck so I'm thankful for what I have.. kinda..hey my shoulder DOESNT hurt yet. Well i am managing to find the time to have campfires with the kids.. (behind the garage) guess I should be sewing the lodge where the seams have weakened and come apart.. seems just more fun to write yall and commisserate.. y/k?? (Sigh)

belt sander? power washer?....lol...thats a bet you'd win. just a gunbarrel flesher, wahinkta, and a paddle. even that nice soft rain water can kill a hide if its at its hydrated limit. thats really the key. control the dampness of the hide and get it thin. if you go to walmart for paint, get the craft acrylic stuff. and if you rub the paint in with a bone, like you would tradish paint. it will look ...well....not like walmart paint. lol

My pics LIED.. lol.. so really needed to do some more thinning on the skin. I now feel a bit more confident that I might survive the softening step on this bison skin.. I don't know.. I've spent quite a bit more time working with this cow's skin and it seems to be getting bigger. so that now.. it seems almost larger than life ok well maybe not that big but i took some more pics just cause I like taking pics of bison skins in frames I think.. someday hope to move on to bison skins outside frames SOFt.. here's a couple before and after pics and one of the cleaner fur.. I washed the hair side yesterday.. again..felt kinda dirty yet..anyway.. more bison skin pics this Afternoon already.. where does the time go? the before hairside after some more thinning

I have to agree with both of you, but I would go even a step father. It is not a nice thing to say to any women. I'm not native but have had people in the past say it to me. They think that they are being "cute" because I am dressed in braintan.
I try to remember that most people do not have enough cultural understanding to know what they are saying. There was a point in my life where I wouldn't have understood either. I usually cringe and bear it until they past on. However, maybe I should educate them so that they don't do it to others. paweaver

Cody, you have always been respectful to me and I know that there is no reason to feel disrespected in any way by you now for repeating a name that was commonly given to native american women. Usually durogatorally (sp?) Probably started many mean fights, too! So tell ya what, I'll take it as the compliment that I think that you may have been trying to add to the discussion, OK? I think that I know you enough to at least GIVE YOU THE BENEFIT OF THE DOUBT HERE! Killstwo.. the painting on your robe? did you paint the whole design on there first with clear Knox gelatin and then paint the black part on later and did you do this before you smoked it at all or after you might have lightly smoked it? It is a very nice image and good that you are replicating hides and skins like this like your ancestors did. Quite admirable and noble of you to carry on this tradition. anyway I'm going to do some bone painting research.. thanks to computers researching isn't such a task! Ill leave that to actually using bones to paint with. Killstwo.. one more little side note. I sure appreciate your tact and diplomacy and realize overall that what the buckrub is, is a great place to convey info.. a taxi cab, for a little analogy.. ha! anyway, sometimes the ride gets well a bit like (a long stretch of bad road, lol) yeah, we don't wanna go there , but all in all, it is a good path and togetherness is what it's all about, so lets all stay a nice little unit cause we need to be as one, regardless, the road gets smoother and if it wasn't for the bumps you might not appreciate the new pavement just as much? hell I'll settle for the dirt path in the woods with the poison berries, but well....it can get lonesome when one doesn't have extended family. Sometimes great divisions are built and they are built on a lack of communication and it's incredibly sad. So i'm going to get off my damned soap box and wish I had charcoal and lighter fluid in which to get my first started! BTW.. When you smoke your skins.. how do you start the fire? any old dang way.. you just get right off your bum and do it and don't waste any time BS'ing about it? basically ... yeah spend less time thinking about it and more time doing it and well I'm sure a lot of this doesn't matter just doing it counts. Cody.. one more note for you... i do this because I love to do it not because it is a chore.. it is fun to feel the connection with the hides and skins. I am getting to know the bison well and it is going to this guy in TX for a few bucks.. probably not enough! but he will buy more cause mine will be better than what he's hoping for even. he even offered to send money to get me restarted doing it again.. my pics have meant a great deal to him. and he loves all the hides and skins, etc.. just doesn't have the time or set up to do it himself. I know that like him you meant to be supportive of me and Killstwo so please keep posting away.. we're all grownups here and a family unit.. just a bit extended.. but one with a strong tie. We've been friends for some time now and I plan to keep it that way. K?
