don't you hate it when this happens. this is a hide i skinned myself so there ain't no knife scores in it nowhere. i had started on it and was ready to soften it. i rolled it up in a bag for the night. the next day i had to work late so i didn't get to it. any hows when i took it out of the bag it had a smell to it. not a bad smell but enough to get your attention. so i decieded to put it in the washer machine. after it finished i checked it and it was fine but still had a faint smell to it. so i washed it again and this is what happened. i've washed hides before with no problems i don't why it decieded to screww up on this almost perfect hide. needless to say i made up a few new cuss words.

all my sympathy billy. i wanted to reply when i saw your posting the 1st time, but the internet signal was too weak .i posted o photo a while ago of a gnu hide. i wanted to show you guys how i would do an "elk" my elk was too big for the shitty little frame my workers made and th2nd attempt, was to big to fit in my shed.someone then decided that it is a good idea to split it down the centre line and buck the one half in a mixture strong enough to dissolve an elephant.i am so dissapointed, and have decide to cut the other half into rawhide thongs,to do the seat of an antique chair. so, yes i am sure even very experienced tanners like jon wright has stories to tell of there mishaps.
