Buffalo raw hide is different than other hides is that in some areas it is extremely thick (over 1 inch) and in other areas it is very thin (less than 1/16). The neck and a strip from the neck to the top of the hump are the thickest areas while the sides of the hump are the thinnest and the rest of the hides varies in thickness. The thick neck area is more fibrous than other areas but seems to be a little weaker. I have a lot of buffalo hides to play with and everyone is different.

I have made knife handles from the Thick portions of the Buffalo rawhide. A soak in the Epoxy resin makes for some really pretty and unique handles. When I get Badhands knife done, I'll post a pic of the Buffalo hide sheath I make for him.
