I won this pipe years ago at Fort Vancouver. The man who made the pipe was a third generation Weirhouser (sp) (affectionately known in the NW as WHOREHOUSER) worker. He said the tiger stipe maple was once the broom handle in the cafeteria. Had to love that one. The little weasel case is adorned with chinese coins and lined in red flannel. The knick-knick cutting board is a piece of moose antler. The stone head pipes you all are making are very very nice. Dlt

NIce, I really like the pewter inlays on the stems. for years I put a weeping heart on anything I made, my signature if you will. Maybe my pipe would benefit by putting it out in the weather for a while. I am not sure what the metal is, but it could stand not to be so shiny and new looking. great work, as always. Your my inspiration for sure. dlt

The easiest way to put a dark patina on steel is to smear mustard on it and let it sit for a couple of hours. Slicing a potato and smearing the juicy bit over the blade will work over night. The potato allows you more time to stop the process exactly where you want it. wash it well when you are done, and dry it off. I like to rub in some carnuba wax afterward. This works for antiqueing brass too.

I've found the best way to rust steel is to let my kids play with it. I tend to forget until the spring thaw when I find it where the weeds were tall.
