Pa, are you saying you do 300 hides per year? Or know someone who does? We average more than that. We tan from six to eight hides per week, every week, every month, every year, for the last 15+ years. Lots of hides, lots of experience, lots of knowledge on the subject. By the way, how is that Dinsmore hide coming out? I guess using a method your use to using as opposed to one your trying for the first time, might make a little difference on the outcome. Unless you are perfect at your first attempt, doing everything exactly right, knowing exactly what to look for in each step. Hummmm
I'm glad your trying it, but as you know, anything takes practice, practice makes perfect. Have you noticed any difference yet? Have you noticed any improvement from stretching the hide from side to side yet? Have you ever read of anyone doing it quite like we do? Stretching and tightening as much as possible to save the stretch?
We consider an easy day, having one to flesh, one to soften and one to pre-stretch. When the weather is warm we often double that since the hides dry faster.
We do occasionally take a day off, but not often. Tanning is as much a part of our life as getting up and having coffee.
So, so far, do you prefer using the chemicals offered by the chemical pusher? Or just brains and water? Which method do you find more convenient so far? I was asking Joe what he thought the advantages of bucking is, and he mentioned something about cutting down the smell. We have found that in summer, if stick a hose down in the barrel, and let cold water circulate, it keeps the rankness of the hide down. How delicate our civilized noses have become
By the way, NW Pa. is my most favorite part of the country. I tried to purchase a house in Titusville years ago but it didn't work out. Kinzu dam area is so nice, have canoed down the river in Cook's forrest. Is it cooks' river? I don't recall now, it was so long ago.
