Couldn't help but send a photo of the 8 hides we did the last 7 days. Some are smoked and some are white. The white ones are going to a rez out west for a girls dress. We get lots of requests for white hides that are used for burrial purposes too. Anyhoo. Had to brag a bit.

Our hides come out the white color but then we smoke them to the darker color.

Well, I've softened 8 in four days this week, should I soften tomorrow and go for 10? My hands are saying no, but my back figures it would be better than scraping. ;D

Do you soften on a frame or by hand? Years ago we use to soften by hand and I didn't care for it at all. Once we started softening on the frame it was much easier for me. Joe still softens by hand occasionally but puts it on a frame to finish it off and flatten it out. Its been chilly here lately but the sun is out and that makes doing hides so much more enjoyable. Have a good one.

I do a little of both, but usually I work 'em by hand until the edges are about done, then frame and finish. I had one small one yesterday that I softened almost entirely by hand, then framed to flatten it out. Didn't work any today, just did a little scraping and some other stuff, like cutting up about 75 suckers with an axe. Some kids were spearing them and brought me three buckets full for coon bait. I don't think I've ever been fish slimed that bad before.

Nice, I really like the color. Do you sew your edges? Staples? Clothes pins?
