i've said uncle on the damned thing.i been working on it since november.won't soften for nothing.the first alum tanned deer i did came out soft as a blanket.this one wont.it's kinda soft.it's a lot bigger than the first one i did.i even let it dry and redid it with eggs, still no luck.gonna smoke it at grizz's house this weekend, and maybe pull it on the cable a little bit more.brain tan seems a hole lot easier to me.i hates me some alum tan

Billy have you tried resoaking it for a day or two. I figure what have you got to loose. Or being Alum tanned you can wash it out and brain it. chuck

i think i'm gonna try again on this.i'm doing it for someone so i want it to be good.no more alum tanning though.it is starting to rip in some places from softening it.i guess i'll soak it in water fer a while and mix up some eggs and water to dress it in.and frame soften it.the first one i framed and it did a lot better.

I know what you mean about the tearing on those.. as I have experienced that on the side edges where the skin is thin. I really have had better luck to soften a hair on alum tanned skins rather than brain tanned.. kinda makes me wonder if you didn't rinse out the metals in the alum or what. I haven't softened that many by alum tanning so not that much help but I think generally the alum seems to 'plump' the skins a lot more.. brain tanning the hair ons was almost impossible for me till I started using the vinegar water step prior to braining them. anyway I think I'm going to use alum on this one young button buck.. I bought some just today and I am going to soak that skin real soon. I think the hockskins should come out dead soft by using the alum.. I WILL KNOW immediately if this is the case.. if so I may never braintan another hair on deerskin again.. just cause I like skinning out the whole deerskin legs and all, y/k? Well anyway I will report back shortly on the young deerskin.. it is extremely thin so dont' think it will take very long to strike it through with the alum taw treatment.. we'll see.

hI paulette and all others.i ve been doing alum tanning for 4 years and then started braintanning.i want to make a jacket out of cowhide, alumtanned and different panels out of buckskin. i started on the cowhide and persevered and true as nuts i got it right. will post a picture as soon as i am familiar with this new ,nice buckrub forum. i think i can maybee on here post plans on how to make a machine to soften a alum salt prepared skin in 20 minutes. would anyone be interested or shoot me down formaking something that might make our work a bit easiier? [paulette, i am typing with my left hand,it turned out to have been a big operation on my right shoulder.

Billy's right, Van. There is a place here for everyone and you just write as much or little as you like and we can all be pretty fascinated or as little fascinated as we like. Actually I personally am pretty fascinated by all that is being posted here and everyone here is just as pleasant as can be. I, too would like to see your jacket or your modern softeneing device,,, whatever works for you is interesting to see especially..
If you don't have a photobucket account Van. It is a great idea to go there and register for one. I'm thinking of going 'pro', lol.. as I have over 800 pics in my free space there that I like to share but it's getting a bit slow at times to upload the pics there anymore.. dunno how many free gigabytes I've used up.. I have over 40 pages of pics in my album there.. lol.. wow. Would like to start making some video with my camera and the 3. per month fee sounds more than reasonable to be able to store and share these videos. Check it out and you'll be sharing pics like crazy.. We'll have to start paying for bandwidth here or making contributions soon no doubt! I'd better get to work!

Van da Man, laughing out loud! I got your email with your picture of the cowskin that you alum tanned. and so I saved the pic and transferred it to my photobucket account.. You need to get a free one and then figure out how to put your pictures on it.. not too hard.. just a matter of spending the time playing on the dang high speed computer! Well anyway here is your cowskin! Very nice.. is is pretty soft?

Well if you can get a cowskin soft by alum tanning it I know I'm going to try the alum on the next bear skin I can get ahold of to tan. May surely be trying it on some calfskins as well.. Have one out there now.. I'm buying a large bag of it soon.
