here is my brain tan coat i finished not to long ago. it took 4 hides to make. the front hide came from a 7 point buck my dad killed the back hide came from the 8 point i killed last year. the sleeves came from a 10 point that my neighbor killed and the fringe and trim came from a small hide i got from some one some where. i copied this coat from a picture drew by rex allen norman from a old muzzleloader magazine. he copied it from an original coat from around 1830. the cut outs on the sleeves are from some red wool i got from beaudro. this coat is made in the tradition of alfred miller's paintings with no buttons but ties. that seems to be more common for the early beaver trapper. heres the drawing from the magazine, the drawing labeled as "B" i used a old flannel shirt for my pattern welted all the seams and used linen cord for the thread.

Holy.. no wonder the place is dead..you've been busy as all get out! Hey that coat looks pretty cosy. You've done a great job. Looks like there's enough room in the sleeves to get it on and off and be comfortable wearing it too. Nice work, Billy! Like the bit of color on the cuffs too.. nice touch. You've an eye for beauty and certainly plenty of tenacity to keep ya going! You tan these skins with the Dinsmore method, did you?

aw thanks yall. ;D. i'm some kind of proud of it. believe it or not but the colar was the hardest part of it. i got mad at it several times and threw a fit and threw the coat in the corner for a few days. but i finally finished it. naw joanne i didn't tan those with the dinsmore method. i have done several hides with there method and will continue to do so. the front hide and the back hide i had tanned them some time back and did the others for the sleeves the same way. yep its roomy and warm

Hey Billy? Do you use the elmers glue to help you hold the pieces in place before you stitch them together? I know that seems to help me stitch what I have done together. I get frustrated with things like that too and seems that sometimes seems to work!

elmer's glue!? huh what?! boy that would make life a hole lot easier. naw i didn't use no elmer's glue. i instead chose to get mad cuss and holler and throw a snot slinging fit and have major chest pains from not breathing normal, from getting angry cuz nothing would hold together. dang joanne where were you with all of those brilliant ideas when i was making that blassed thing. ;D

NICE job Billy! that's a SW method of decoration and looks real cool!
FWIW - better than Elmer's is fabric glue available in your favorite crafts/sewing section of most stores that carry such things......A little dab will do ya and it doesn't harden up/get brittle like Elmer's can
But ya got a let that hair grow - mines down below my butt when I take the braids out (I'm 6" hair is 42")! ;D Of course I may soon have to do a comb over!

brain tan buck skin is nice to wear. after i have been wearing my brain tan pants for a while and then change back into blue jeans. its kind of like going from fine silk to burlap. of course here in the deep south with the humidity at 80% almost every day during the summer nothing is comfortable to wear
