Well, first we have to have a RR spike. A quick walk ('bout an hour) nown a nearby RRtrack netted me about 30 of them. Some were Low carbon, some marked HC (high carbon) 2 were marked S, and 4 were Wrought Iron (track mustv'e been there a while!) I chose one of the HC spikes. Fire up the forge, and heat up the head. this is what we will be forming the head out of. Draw out the beard, be careful to not let the edges of the spike head fold over (this causes cold shuts) If you see the edges start to create a "fishmouth", hit it with a rasp or grinder to remove the sharp edges. Once the bit is rough formed, Slit and drift the spike for the handle hole, just like I did for the Pipehawk. Be sure to make your first cut centered on the spike...Take your time centering it for the first tap, and make sure your chisel is at 90deg while you punch through. Once the d rift is through, I like to heat up the end of the spike, chuck it in the vice, and give it a decorative twist or two (grin) A 40 grit Flap wheel on the angle grinder makes short work of shaping and cleaning up Back in the forge ... heat to critical, and quench in cold water... remember, edge first! I chucked up the 120 grit flapwheel in the grinder, and polished 'er up! Tomorrow we'll make a handle for it outta some Crepe Myrtle from the yard.
