Hello all you moccasin makers out there who make and sell mocs. I need some input as to how to price my moccasins. Sounds strange to ask that question, but I recently got a request for a pair of the sheep skin lined, Salish side seam moccasins I make. When I price the cost of the thick mule deer hide, the sheepskin and then my labor, the price is insane !!!! It doesn't make any sense to lose money on a deal.
Moccasin grade mule deer hide........ $120 (thats at a low persqft.) I always send left over leather from the project. We would sell just the hide for $130 to $140 !
Sheep skin..........(not sure of price but around $40 ea?)
My labor.... will take at least three days to whip these bad boys together. They are very labor intense to make, but definately worth it when done.
So for a pair of mocs, over $200! Thats nuts ! Sure, you end up with a tough pair of mocs, ideal for wet and cold weather, but gee, buy a pair of sorells ! They are cheaper !
What do all of you charge, and how can you justify selling cheaper than that? I can't believe I am putting too much value on our product or my labor. Whatcha think? lt

Check out Steger Mukluks. These are made from commercially tanned moose hide and run in the $200 and up range. Don't sell yourself short Vicki! I try to sell my hides at $20 a sq. ft. It would help if everyone raised their prices a bit so that I wouldn't seem too expensive. hee hee Most braintan I see here in MN at $15 a sq. ft. isn't even soft. This gives braintan bad name. I alway say "you get what you pay for". Remember your time is worth money, too!

I don't believe that is unreasonable. If someone goes to a Shoemaker for a custom made pair of shoes, you'll pay a lot more. Good quality machine made mocs will cost 100 and up. DO NOT get in the habit of underselling the worth of your labor. Working for nothing is pointless. We are all selling custom made to order crafts, that you can not get from Wallmart. Think of what you would pay for a good pair of cowboy boots.

Back in the 80 and 90s I made a lot of things and sold them cheap to move them. I got to feeling so frustrated, especially when dealing with "the middle man" who made all the bucks and I did all the labor. Thank goodness for the interne. And thanks for the advice. Holy crap, 15 persqft. We friggin wish !!! lt
