I need to make a fleshing knife out of a lawn mower blade how do I know which one has good steel?

you can do a quench test heat it to non magnetic and quinch a small section then put it in a vice and smack it with a big hammer if it breaks it should be good

Generally if it has a part # stamped in it it's good steel. The cheepo mild steel blades dont have a part #. Now just cause ya cant see one dont mean it sucks, it just means that THEN you do the quench test.
