Yesterday we decided to head south into the Dove Tail Drainage and walk the bottom of the dried out Dove Tail creek. We find so many marine fossils that we do not even keep them unless they are really nice examples. The creek bed changes every year during snow melt and run off. Last year it was pretty much covered in dirt, where as this year a lot of gravel is exposed. Occasionally a buffalo head will get washed out of the banks of the Musselshell so we are always looking for bones sticking out of the sides of the banks of the creeks too. This old bone, not a fossil, was about eight feet down. Not enough there to really identify it. Cow? Buffalo? Elk? We did find two nice examples of marine fossils. Joe found the best which was the first of this sort we have found. It is an ammonite, and the other a not too bad example of the Baculite rock that when segments were broken off over time and edges smoothed down, the Blackfeet gathered them as totems and charms, believing they resembled the Buffalo, and would bring the buffalo to them. The ammonite is on the left.

Great photos! Sounds like a great adventure looking for fossils and old bones and it has to be a thrill when you find a nice one. As a kid, I loved collecting fossils on the farm in Michigan. I winter in Arizona now and am looking forward next year to getting out and looking for interesting rocks and fossils, etc. Could you tell me what state you live in? I hope you'll share more photos of your area and your interesting finds. Thanks for sharing!
