I have had this fossil for years, but since I am giving it away within the next couple days I thought i'd better get a photo of it first, and thought some of you might enjoy seeing it too. It is a Baculite, a marine fossil. These fossils lay around all over the place out here in our area, in fact unless they are really special looking, we don't even pick them up anymore. This one is so unlike any other that we have seen. Most are the color of gray rock or some even have a bit of pearl shell still on them, but never have we found one like this. My doctor, who in all his wisdom and talent has within the last year, replaced my hips and knees, has a son who is five, and is so ,so into fossils, so much that he would rather watch the discovery channel than cartoons, that JOe and I have made a present of all our fossil collection, to encourage his interest. My doctor said his son is thilled! Anyway, enough words, here's the rock ! The fossil below, on the left, is what the Baculites we find most, look like. It has the pearly shell on the outside but most of them we find are just gray rock.

ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL! It looks like a baculite that got covered in tree resin at a later geological period and it turned into Amber.
Just beautiful.

Well I'm glad someone, Pheonix, came up with a possible explination. The inside of the rock is gray, so what ever happened to make the outside so pretty definately stayed on the outside. My doctor has a friend who is a paleontologist who can no doubt come up with a reason too. I figured if Joe could part with the Triceratops tail vertebra he found, I could part with this. Just west of us is a sandstone cliff with a bunch of what is called a concretion. Basically something got filled in with minerals and fossilized. These concretions are on the same cliff as where we found the tail vertebra. The photo below is by far the most spectacular fossil I've ever seen. A couple years ago one of our hunters returned with an "interesting looking rock" that he gave to me. I immediately recognized it and gave it back to him telling him it was much to special to give away and he needed to take it home to his son. If you look close you can actually see a skeleton of an alligator or something similar next to the fossilized yoke.

And of course we found all these in our back yard since we don't really own our state lands we pay taxes on ,and removing fossils from them is forbidden by the government who really owns the lands. Barf.

You can see the concretions in the sandstone cliff at the top. Those are the ones in the photos.
