Boye's "step by step knifemaking" is another good one. Tim Lively's video "Knifemaking unplugged" is definitely worth the small price. Wayne Goddard's "$50 knife shop" is worth a read.

a few years back I attempted custom knife making, I met bob dozier out of arkansas. Although I prefer a good forged knife he is probably one of the foremost knife makers in the country. He has several good tips and study material on his website, just search his name and it'll bring up his site and more. He started with a good learning of metallurgy first and if you can get the basics of that I think it's the most helpful. Has anyone ever forged with 01 tool steel? I'm hearing it doesn't forge well?

o1 is horrible steel, send me all of it in your possession so I can take the burden of it off your shoulders ;D seriously though o1 is absolutely wonderful stuff, just remember when your working tool steels you have to work hot and thermal cycle carefully ( work it from yellow to red, dont work it cold, stick it back in the fire at red )
for a really good book on bladesmithing I recommend "the complete bladesmith" by jim hrisoulas

thank you metalbender, i have annealed 01 and shaped with a grinder, but I have never forged with it, I can get blanks at a decent price and I"m going to try that soon. I might have too many projects on hand however, I just might do some trading and have a blade forged out by you pro's instead,, looks like there are good ones in here!
