These styles are called blacksmith knives, or in medeval culture "Womens knives" Women didnt rate the high finish given to the fighting knives, so these were used for cooking and serving sets. A man would use his belt knife or dagger at the table. There's a pretty good market for these tings at Renn faire's and such

Hey Phoenix, How ya doin?Well I found a knife while we were campin, many years ago. It's seems more than 10 yrs ago, anyway it sorta reminds me of one of those Damascus knives you mention.Oldest sons outa state,he coulda told me,since he's a welder and knows some about knives.Talked to him last night, first he thought 1800's then asked a few more Q's it has no handle, rather no wood or bone.Does have 3 holes, thru bottom of metal handle. And the blade looks to me to be black smithed.Doesn't seem to be outa any press or mold to speak of.The blade looks aprx 15 or so inches long.I have always been a treasure hunter, or a junker. One mans junk is another mans treasure. If y'all could only see all the stuff, metal, steel, etc, that my brother hauls of to scrapper to be melted back down. It's a shame..but..that's how he makes a liven, that and traden. But,about the knife,it has edges, like you mention, about where they hammer out a nice edge.It does make ya wonder about the story behind it??I found it out in the middle of nowhere, way in the woods. And I find myself tryin to remember just exactly where.I just remember, many trees, alot of brush, and I have been asked, but I never gave it away.As it was a treasure, from one of my adventures. It's a keepsake..It definitely was not a ladies knife,or I don't think so...anyway.But,it is now!!! How can I tell how old it is..I have I eye for antiques. But,this is out of my League. Thanks

I'll help if I can, I'm sure the others here will speak up if they recognize it. You may have a civil war era find. I'm sure there is a thread here on postin pictures.

Old Japanese war sword had holes like that on the grips and it i dentified a maker or family, the grips were cut down to fit the soldier sometimes cutting through a hole.My mother in law had my father in laws swords and a guy from Japan came to town buying old souvenier sword our guys brought back. The one she had had cherry bark on the grips and scabbard,he through 500.00 on the table as soon as i walked into his hotel room, and right behind him were many many others he had bought.Had to go through an interprature too,out of respect i didn't ask for more,he was building a museum in Japan. That dude was loade with cash!

I don't really know about this one,I don't have a handle on it.I have to borrow phone that has internet so I can post it to the interent.Usually I have CDs from vacations, and I know how to post from that way. But,it took me a bit to learn, and before then my daughter n law helped me.She's a photographer, she took these pics out on the ole farm, out somewhat close to Wooloroc.Sure wish they could bought the ole place, but it was'nt for sale.It was a cool ole farm house, with a winding road,a creek way out in the back, they had a few farm animals, and took just great pics. You could set out on the ole porch, and see the hills, trees, cows, you name it.They would send my pics to email and I was able to post them that way.SO,it''ll be a few days,I mentioned earlier. It's because I was waiting, for one of the kids.ANd then I post it,and see what ya'll think.Maybe someone can Identify it.I kinda figured someone made it.And maybe they just hadn't put a handle on it yet.I will look at some of the knife pics,on here. As, I have before, just I don't know much about it.I'm sorry you didn't get more for your knife ThunderMoon, but it was a nice price.Though I know some things are very valuable. And at least it's in a museum.

If you found it near tablerock, you may have found one of Tim Lively's knives. Tim used to actually take a small forge and go up there and camp, forging blades in the park, and he was quite likely to leave a hammer finish. here's a link to some of his stuff www.createspace.com/Store/ShowEStore.jsp?id=213497

T/y I did get a chance to look some. But,I had problems loading that new windows upgrade. It said compatiable with Windows or Mac programs of various versions.Of which mine is a latter edition,I just know that when they have you load up all that stuff to your computer it just seems to slow it down more in othe ways.I did see some close matches.I got curious the other day,and went and got it,it stays stored away for safety.I got alot of hunters in the family, and we always say that kinda stuff stays put up.No grandchildren close these days. But,I always kept it put up so they didn't have any curious moments. It's not a shiny blade.I don't think I found it in Ark,or Ms I keep thinkin it was here in Oklahoma.I was in Ms,and Ark several times over the yrs. But,I'll remember,I do remember family said I didn't need it,when I found it.However,I have always found good treasures. It's been my hobby since before I was even in school. It was always adventure, to go rock huntin, fossils, and all kinds of cool stuff. My dad spent some yrs in the mining industry,as well as both of my grandpas, and uncles. So,I'm a treasure hunter, who besides me liked goin to the junkyard when they was small children.I know I wasn't by myself...That's why I finally gave up garage selling, flea marketing, and on an occasion it's still fun. So,yrs ago I put up the ole blade.ON another adventure.....I found this really cool, triangle dinner bell. The ones like you see on the old cowboy shows. And I brought it back few yrs ago from Nevada.I brought it back for a friend. As I found it in the heart of mining country.Along with some other very cool, trinklets. And took pictures, that were old 1800's and 1900 dwellings. And I know some of the History behind them. These were of places long forgotten to many. Dwellings the old miners, and other people, who came into the area stayed in, they don't look like much. And mostly time, has taken it's toll on them. But,they sure are interesting.Way out by Round Mt,Neveda& Carvers,NV.
