Well I guess you can get away with it providing the bear is small enough.. and well this one certainly is. Can't get ANY smaller and still be considered LEGAL. This one I came to learn was in the possession of Mi's DNR for a couple of weeks until they finally gave it back to the young man who killed it up in Mi's upper peninsula last Oct.
I can't help but feel very sorry for the very young bear! I can also feel for the young man who took it as perhaps he thought this might be his one chance in a lifetime to kill a bear and receive a bear tag or something.. hard to say.. I met with his dad to do the tanning of it.
Anyway it surely IS just precious. They all are. I just neutralized the tanning solution and gave it a shampoo and condition and spinned the water out of it in my washing machine and gave it a quick blow dry with my shop vacuum leaf blower. Next is time to paint on some pro tanning oil and try to be patient for softening! Don't have a huge drum or a small one.. so will just pull and stretch as it dries...patience, patience.. same with the little deerskin.. he's been oiled and is in the process of being softened in this picture.

The deer was taken by a 12yo.. the bear by a 19 y/o. Been my experience to know that it's probably the younger set that will be more than likely to just take what's in the crosshairs, eh?? Killers!! lol.. oh well not for me to say.. glad I have the opportunity to preserve them at least.
