I always wondered why horse tail hair wasn't used for sewing "back then". Does it not hold up? Seems it would have been the perfect material, strong, available. I'll have to grab one of the local rancher's horses and give it a try. Must be something wrong with it, as it is just too obvious a choice. Seems like on the Learning channel when they show mummies, the hair is always intact or at least scattered around. lt

longtrail, if i remember i have some research on that, might take awhile to find it. The only thing that strikes my memory right now as to thread would be linen, silk, and of course sinew. silk thread got real popular during the trade era, cotton thread came in a little later on, linen was around forever. I know horse hair was used to braid and make twine and small rope, i don't see a reason as to why it wasn't used as thread,, however something logical can prove to be false as one researches things more.

found a little on it,, HAIRCLOTH , I don't know many who has heard of that, it was horse or camel hair (tail or mane) weaved into a mat looking cloth, it was stiff and un-supple. Well used by brewers on the kiln floor to keep grain from falling into the furnace. so, it was used as a stiff carpet like fabric, but i don't have anything on it being used for thread. paleo planet might know ? I failed to mention it was used for fishing line also, i have a set of fly's and horsetail leader that was giving to me, seems like it would hold up fine.

LT, the prob with hair as a thread is it's directional. hair is a modified scale... Imagine a snake... in one direction, it is smooth as silk, rub it the other direction, it's more luke sawteeth. The other consideration, is that hair as a thread is monofiliment... this means, if the ONE filament breaks, the thread breaks.

Yes, Joanne, like many craft people she is amazing. She has really kept alive some of the fine arts of native crafts. She has helped me out several times with really good suggestions on my clothing and preparations for re-enactment.
