Lawern, this was actually one of my lesser efforts ;)Cody, what most of us do is learn the specifics of whatever steel we plan to use, and by that I mean carbon content and heat treating parameters. Two books I highly recommend is The Wonder of Knifemaking and The 50.00$ Knifeshop, both by ABS Mastersmith Wayne Goddard. These two books are geared toward beginners and explains in detail all you will need to know. Both books will cost less than 50 bucks, and is your best investment, and they will get you on the road to making nice, servicable knives. Another thing I can recommend is knifemaking specific forums such as this one www.knifenetwork.com. Forums like this are a wealth of free information, the only thing it will cost you is a little time.
