Yes congrats, Cody.. you are going to take the time to skin out the toe bones and all aren't you??? Not so very hard to do that.. I love fox and I know the smell.. cool how all the different animals have their essences isn't it? I smoke the bear i'm working on.. almost completely wiped out the bear scent! I can use the power washer on these skins and seeing as I don't use soap with the washer they can be quite clean and I can still detect like that fox odor that you're mentioning... neat huh? I will use some soap on these two billy goat skins I got from the butcher.. hahaha.. that is an odor I can very well do without.. uck.

Yes toes and all this one might end up a quiver .First red this tear we just started waiting for the hunters to get out of the woods too many sticky fingers and hound dogs .Moving to a different place tomorrow aught to be more predators there cats too .Want me a bobcat vest used to have one that burned in my house years ago. This one has a white tip on its tail where most reds here have a black tip kind of like greys .

I was looking on that taxidermy.net and there're all kinds of fox you can buy.. and other animals that are odd in color like black coon and coyote.. be real cool to see those.. I'm really j of you guys that trap and get all these cool skins! never ending supply of your own critters to tan.. how cool IS that?? gotta be plenty fun checking those traps and snares, hmm?

Well your post got me to thinking that it's been awhile since I'd seen a red fox and danged if a guy didn't bring one over for me to tan yesterday! A red one.. and it's got a little bit of white hairs at the end of it's tail! These guys had mentioned how they think other fox have eluded being caught but this one they said was young and not too smart. So surprised them I think. My daughter fell right in love with this skin. I have some sewing and softening left to do on it.. I stuck this skin right into the alum..I didn't have much to flesh so I mostly pulled what flesh there was on it off.. I think any problems that are occuring with my braintanning any furs are due to not stretching and drying these out on frames so I think the alum may give me better results just from the way I'm handling the skins I'm doing initially.. I keep forgettting that slow and steady wins the race, so to speak. Anyway I was all geeked up about taking pics of the red to show ya.. hard to take the pics of the red fox.. they're not very photogenic at all.. so I think the best pic I could manage to get was with my bopper daughter in the pic! She is really not into what I do with the tanning and stuff but this fox's fur really appealed to her, lol. This fox sure had a prime fur on it.. totally full.. the skin is like nothing and the fur is just super thick and heavy. Didn't take long at all to dry this out with the new vacuum either.. It was coming out crappy from soaking it in the alum so I had to stop and shampoo the fur.. and start over. Quite the skin tanner I am.. lol. Hope the oiling and softening part goes smooth. I know I probably should have done that already but it was getting too late!

it does, don't he? not hard to figure out why cody and badhand and i got totally addicted to tanning furs.. they are just so beautiful.. .. i took some more pics of this one.. you can see where I messed up.. dah.. well eventually i'll learn to slow DOWN.. She actually has all four legs just not all attached quite yet! oh well the bottom side of this fox is well worth bearing the brunt of my foolishness.. sh*t sometimes just happens to the best of us, right?? Probably doesn't to cody and Badhand anymore but then they've got a few years on me.. so I got a cheap excuse!

That's a real nice job on the fox. I have not seen a fox down this way in quite some time. I see mostly coyotes and bobcats. Probably too many hunters and sticky fingers like Cody said.

I have yet to soften her. I just soaked it for a bit in the alum.. there was nothing to the skin and I really couldn't tell if it was striking through or not anyway.. I just got antsy and took it out of the mix of alum, salt, neutralized in the baking soda and began to dry the fur.. well that stuff gets all over the fur so had no choice but to shampoo it.. so I really like to get the hair dry on the furs.. I just have never stretched these skins in frames and I think it's why I'm having some problems sometimes softening them because they haven't 'cured' all taut like that.. anyway I stretched it as it MOSTLY dried and hopefully it'll take to some oils well to rehydrate and then soften it.. I'm thinking to get some of the commercial stuff... the protan oil and try it and see if it works remarkably well.. I'm just looking for what works quickest and easiest for me.. I'm sure wires aren't super expensive.. I just haven't bought any and really not sure how to use them as it is.. maybe I SHOULD.. might make a world of difference?? Heckifino.. it's all a lot of work.. but I could be making more for myself.. dunno till I try.. If I see one and have the cash I might get one and just see.. Seems all my dollars are going into the gas tank on the truck!.. last months allowance was a 4 dollar sticker of a bear paw for the back window!
