My neighbor let me borrow his to sight in Junior McCoy's new rifle Santa brought. The thing is awesome for sighting in. A little on the expensive side but well worth it to me. INFO from MidwayUSA website: The Caldwell Lead Sled takes the pain out of test firing or zeroing large caliber rifles and can reduce felt recoil by up to 90%. This exclusive design allows the shooter to add up to four 25 lb bags of lead shot (sold separately) to the base of the rest. The upright rear rest supports the butt of the stock and transfers the recoil impulse to the rest itself, rather than your shoulder. This prevents flinching and the creation of bad shooting habits. The front rest is adjustable for height and a front rest bag is included.

Installing an aftermarket recoil pad on that hard shooter helps also. I like to use the Limbsaver recoil pad on my hard shooting rifles. Sures tames them down on the old shoulders.

I may have to give one of those a try. I have a couple of Ruger #1's , in .375 H&H and .458 Win mag that kick a bit. The 375 is not so bad, the recoil is just fast.

You can buy the Limbsaver made to fit your rifle or shotgun or you can buy one that you grind to fit. I'll be picking up a grind to fit one in a few days to have installed on one of my 30-06's. The made to fit Limbsaver runs around 30 bucks. The grind to fit is cheaper, but more expensive if you have a smith install it for you.
I wanted to have a grind to fit one and take it to a local gunsmith who will saw the stock off just a bit so the length of pull will be the same as the factory recoil pad. The Limbsaver pads are much thicker. My local gunsmith charges 20 bucks to saw the stock off and grind the pad to the same dimensions as my stock and I will then have a custom fitted recoil pad that will tame my 30-06 down to about like shooting a 7mm08 or something of that recoil. So I'm going to be out in the neighborhood of 45 to 50 bucks to get one completely installed with same length of pull and fitted flush with the stock.
Now if you plan on trading or selling your rifle later on, you might want to go with the pad that's made to fit your rifle or shotgun. That way, the stock won't be shortened if you sell it and you can just place the old factory pad back on when trading. I won't be trading mine off as I have had extensive accurizing done to my rifles, so they are all keepers.

I went by the sporting goods store yesterday, bought a grind to fit Limbsaver recoil pad ($31.95) carried the Ruger 30-06 rifle that I wanted it on to the gun shop today. They will have to cut about 3/8 inch off my stock so the pull will be the same length (cost $20.00 to cut stock and install new recoil pad and grind it to fit). The Limbsaver recoil pad is thicker. I will pick my rifle up next Wednesday and my old hard kicking 30-06 will recoil more like a 243.
I might take the Sako 30-06 and have it done to it also. And I'm thinking my Browning Bar 270 might want to have that done also, might get it done a little later.
