Many moons ago, I use to shoot a Kentucky Long Barrel, flintlock rifle, 45 cal. I was told that you know when you have the right load and everything is happening at peak performance when, after you shoot, and go to blow down the barrel, you see red beads of (something or other) inside the barrel. I use to see that, right before I weirdly enjoyed the taste of bear grease from the patch and burnt blackpowder. Yummmmmmy. Also a warning, incase anyone out there is new to shooting black powder and gets "advice"from a couple of Aholes standing near by. I was at a small town shoot, and not very familiar with my flintlock. I loaded, patch, powder, ball, partially filled the pan and raised the barrel to shoot. Click. I must have had a confused look on my face as two guys were seeming to have a few good laughts at my expense. "blow down the barrel !" said one SOB, and me, ignorant of the dangers of losing my head, did just that. It was not later until I became familiar whith the expression of HANG FIRE did I realize how close I came to dying, and how foolish those guys were to have nearly removed me from this earth with their bad advice. Caution, caution.

that was a close call! most of the clubs around here have put a stop to that, and no loading from the horn. they had a bad accident in kansas where a guy loaded up after several other shots, he had a fancy instant powder measure on the tip of his horn, when he poured his powder those little red sparks lit off and the whole horn blew up. Your correct, a little caution and good advice goes a long way! I"m glad your still here!

What a dumb but ! He could have killed you .I was reading a article about a guy shooting from a bench and had a missfire and he just put it in a rack behind him and I cant remember if he went and ate or what but it was several minutes later when he took the gun down and ran his rod with a ball puller on it and when it bumped the ball it went of and shot his ramrod right through his hand into the roof could have taken some parts off him .Thats just a example of how long a hang fire can wait!
